The book has some pretty strong themes and events that happen throughout the story such as prejudice, brutality and murder all of which Peekay has watch, during his childhood he was bullied for being English at an all afrikaans borading school he had to go there because his mother had a mental breakdown and had to go to a mental ward. When he eventually gets out of the school he moves to  a town called Barberton where a large amount of the book and on the train he meets a man called Hoppie who is a boxer and that gave peekay an interest in boxing which evolves much more throughout the book seen when a man called geel peet teaches peekay many things about boxing, Geel Peet is a warder at the prison in Barberton. When Peekay arrived in Barberton he met a german doctor of music named “Doc”. He and Peekay quickly formed a strong bond which lasts all throughout the story.

One of the key ways that Peekay changes is when he gave hope to others, when he first went to barberton prison, a location in barberton which is the town Peekay moved to. Barberton is a pretty bleak place. You see this when a black prisoner by the name of Geel Peet gets  accused of stealing and gets beaten for it, at one point in the book he gets a fist to the face just for applauding and cheering Peekay. When Peekay arrived in the prison because his friend doc was sent  there because he was accused of gathering information on south africa for the Nazis life in the prison slowly but surely start getting better the more Peekay comes to visit an example of this is when Peekay becomes friends with a prison guard called Gert Marais who allows Doc to host a concert and to let the prisoners attend. Another good example is when Peekay smuggles tobacco into the prison. After a while the black prisoners started calling him the tadpole angel. A symbol of hope.

Another key way Peekay change is when he starts to notice the oppression around him one of the first times you see this is when he sees that black prisoners at Barberton prison get beat for little or even no reason an example of  this is when Geel peet gets Punched for shouting praise for Peekay. His eyes get opened up even more when he goes
